Jessica Lange…

cast1d.jpg I was just starting out as a makeup artist and doing some photo test’s with a photographer named Les Underhill. One day I went to his studio to meet a model named Jessica Lange. She had just arrived in New York after living in Paris. She told me she had been studying acting and mime and that she had a french boyfriend named Phillipe Petite (the guy that later tightrope walked between the World Trade Center Towers). I’m not positive but I think she was with Ford Models, and I do remember that she told me that Elieen Ford suggested she have a nose job because she thought her nose was too flat. I thought she was beautiful and had a Marilyn Monroe vulerability to her. Kinda shy and very sweet… but with a mischievous laugh. She liked to laugh alot. After the test shoot Les booked us both to do an ad for some kind of liqueur or something. Jessica was to look like a medieval serving wench in a low cut blouse holding a tray of drinks. I brought a long hair piece with me to add to her own hair so it tumbled over one shoulder and onto her ample cleavage. Except for one thing… she didn’t have ample cleavage. So I had to make her some! My experiance working for Cosmopolitan Magazine paid off…as I taped, padded, and shaded her chest to perfection. The hardest part was that Jessica couldn’t stop laughing…she just thought this was hilarious and the more she laughed the more she made me laugh. She laughed so hard that the false eyelashes I had applied were starting to come unglued… which of course made us both crack up even more. We finally pulled ourselves together and went out on to the set to do the photo shoot. Everyone was very pleased…but we couldn’t look at each other for fear of starting to laugh all over again. Sometime after this we did some beauty campaigns for Elizabeth Arden cosmetics…and she even stopped by my apartment one night for a party I was having. Much, much later, we ran into each other on the street…it was right after her first film, KING KONG had opened. I remember she had on a trench coat closed up tight around her neck and that she gave me a little hug before we parted…but she seemed a little uncomfortable. Was it because I knew her secret?

This was a photo shoot I art directed for the designers NICO & ADRIAN. One of the top air brush artists did the designs on the face and arms of models GLENNA and KASSI of NEXT MODEL MGNT. Actually the design was done only on one of the models arms orginally and while working with the retoucher, Willie at CUSOR, I had him duplicate the design to the other models arm…thats whats great about digital. Jerry Hall…

Macy’s “the largest department store in the world” asked me to create the hair and makeup for a new ad they were shooting. And I was especially excited because the model was to be Jerry Hall. The industry was abuzz with the story that Jerry had been discovered in Paris while on vacation from Texas by the amazing fashion illustrator Antonio Lopez. She was said to be ultra sexy… six feet tall with waist length blond hair. I couldn’t wait to work with her. She arrived at the location in the dead of winter wearing a fur cocoon type coat over a short dress with pink maribou trimmed bedroom slippers…in the snow! And she spoke with a Texas drawl so thick you could cut it with a knife. I loved her! The photo shoot went great and we worked together quite often after that. I learned that she wanted me to do her makeup a certain way…a shiny gold shadow on her eyelid with dark eyeliner and false eyelashes on the outside of the top lid only. And of course with that long hair there wasn’t all that much you could do with it…thankfully Jerry really knew how to work that mane of hers. She preferred to be the star and was often accused of upstaging the other model’s. Particularly when she had to pose with girl’s in what is called a double or triple shot. She would drape her long locks over her arm as she held it up behind her head and many times that would block the other girls face…or at least make her struggle to work around it. Jerry was very much in demand all over the world as a model and as a party girl. She fell in love with singer Bryan Ferry after posing as a mermaid for the cover of his album “Siren”. But it wasn’t long before the gossip media carried the story that she was breaking off her engagement to the Roxy Music crooner to go off and live with Mick Jagger…who she eventually married. It was for the best…if she had wed Bryan her married name would have been Jerry Ferry. Jerry Jagger has a better ring to it…don’t you think? (ANGEL by THIERRY MUGLER)
